Philippe Starck

Born: 1968.\ Famous works: KTribe lamp, Romeo Moon lamp, Miss K lamp, Rosy Angelis lamp, mouse for Microsoft and spacecraft for Virgin Galactic.\ Education: Designer.

The museums of the world are infallible. Paris, New York, Munich, London, Chicago, Kyoto, Barcelona - all exhibiting the work of a master. Likewise, a long list of awards speaks of his work: Designer Of The Year, Grand Prix for Industrial Design, an Oscar for design, Officier des Arts et des Lettres and many more.

When we discover an object or place designed by Philippe Starck, we enter a world of wall-to-wall imagination and surprises. For more than three decades, this unique and diverse creator, designer and architect has been part of our daily lives, creating unconventional objects whose purpose is to be good rather than beautiful, taking the audience out of themselves and most importantly towards something better.

Black and white portrait of a man with curly hair and a friendly smile. He is wearing a classic jacket and standing in front of a neutral background.

A green future

His father, an inventor and aeronautical engineer, gave the young Philippe Starck the desire to create and the capacity to dream. Years and several prototypes later, he was commissioned to work for President François Mitterrand. It was also here that he began designing furniture for leading Italian and international companies. Starck designs his hotels and restaurants in the same way a director makes a movie. He develops scenarios that will lift people out of everyday life and into an imaginative and creative mental world. His hotels have become timeless icons and have added a new dimension to the global cityscape.

Philippe Starck believed in the power of green long before ecology became fashionable, out of respect for the future of the planet. He recently developed the revolutionary concept of 'democratic ecology' by creating affordable home wind turbines, which will soon be followed by solar-powered ships and hydrogen cars. A tireless and rebellious citizen, Starck considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a more just world. He gets tuned into our dreams, wants and needs; sometimes before we get there ourselves. He touches us through his work, which is fine and intelligent, but most of all he touches us because he puts his heart into creating objects that are good even before they are beautiful.

"I like to open the doors to people's brains." - Philippe Starck.
