The generation of talented furniture designers trained under the old apprenticeship system is where we find the renowned Jørgen Gammelgaard. After completing his apprenticeship, Gammelgaard studied with Grete Jalk and was then admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts' furniture program, where he worked under Poul Kjærholm and Ole Wanscher. Gammelgaard later went on to work with several other big names of the time, such as Arne Jacobsen, Mogens Koch, Steen Eiler Rasmussen and Jørgen Bo. During this period, when the world-famous Tip-Top lamp was conceived, Jørgen Gammelgaard worked as a consultant for the UN in Samoa.
Some of Gammelgaard's most successful furniture designs include the Karm chair and the Skagen chair, and both chairs are still in production today. Jørgen Gammelgaard was a unique talent. He was the first designer ever to receive both of the two major annual design awards, and in 1987, Gammelgaard was appointed professor of furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 49.
