What exactly are we celebrating on Singles Day?

Single Days (or Guanggun Jie, as the day is called in China) was originally about breaking the monotony and loneliness of being single. At least that's what four students from Nanjing University reportedly discussed in 1993. They agreed to celebrate the single life with a day filled with fun activities with friends. It was no coincidence that the date for Singles Days was November 11. The date is the day with the most "singles" (1s) 1-1/1-1.

Subsequently, the tradition quickly spread to other universities around China and later to other countries around the world. In the early years, Single Days were seen as a countermeasure to Valentine's Day and the offers were therefore mostly aimed at singles. Nowadays, pretty much any kind of product can be on sale during Singles Day. Just like we know it from the Black Friday sales.
