AJ TABLE LAMP - A DESIGN ICON IN THE MAKING

Take a journey back to the 1960s. John F. Kennedy ran for president, the Beatles filled stadiums around the world to the tune of Love Me Do, women made their mark on the labor market and the world's first design hotel was built right in the middle of Copenhagen. And that very design hotel was also the birthplace of some of Arne Jacobsen's most popular and iconic furniture and lamps. And the lamps - specifically the AJ table lamp - that's what this article will be about.

Arne Jacobsen - The designer and architect

Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902, and trained as an architect in 1924. However, creativity raged in the young Jakobsen, so after graduating, he started a new education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1927. Arne Jacobsen's thinking was innovative and deeply influenced by his architectural background, and he quickly became one of the young hopefuls at the school. The year after graduating, he won a design award for a project for the National Museum and the stage was set for a promising design career.

In the 1930s, Arne Jacobsen really put his name on the map and the whole new style, International Functionalism, was born with Arne Jacobsen at the forefront. In the years to come, Arne Jacobsen designed countless houses in Denmark and abroad, all with the same simple, functionalist and modern expression. Among others, Rødovre City Hall, the National Bank and the City Hall in Aarhus are all icons designed by Arne Jacobsen's hand.

During the 50s, Arne Jacobsen also turned his hand to furniture design, with the same architectural idiom as his buildings. The design icon "Ant" was the first chair to see the light of day, and it is still an insanely popular chair around the world today.

The hotel that revolutionized Danish design

Then we come to the landmark design year 1960.

SAS Royal Hotel was designed by Arne Jacobsen as the first design hotel in the world. The hotel would put Denmark on the world tourist map and become an attractive destination for American tourists, who with new flight routes had easier access to the Nordic countries.

Everything in the hotel was imbued with Arne Jacobsen's eye for modern and elegant design! The iconic chairs, the Swan and the Egg, were designed specifically for the hotel's foyer and were meant to be the soft counterpart to the angular architecture of the building. The consistent style was carried out to the fullest and even cutlery, door handles and wallpaper were Arne Jacobsen designs.

AJ Lamp comes into being

Part of the design concept was of course also the lighting in the hotel. Designed in 1957 as a beautiful and sculptural part of the interior design of the SAS Royal Hotel, the AJ lamps were something completely new in the world of lighting with their design language and elegant architectural expression. The AJ Lamp was subsequently produced in collaboration with Louis Poulsen.

Today, AJ lamps are among the most popular lamps as the timeless design fits into any home. Whether you're into the Nordic and minimalist look, or you're a colorful and "more is more" kind of person, an AJ lamp is guaranteed to fit perfectly in your home.

A lamp investment for life

The AJ Table Lamp is a perfect addition to any home and can be placed wherever you want it. Do you want it to look great on your desk and provide perfect task lighting? Maybe you want it on a small table in the living room to create the right cozy atmosphere when you're reading a good book or just fiddling with your phone? Or should it stand on the windowsill and, with its simple yet insanely beautiful design, be a feast for the eyes and give both you and your guests a little design experience when passing it by? Wherever you choose to place this gorgeous lamp, there's no doubt that it will become a classic for life - also in your home!

The lamp is made of steel and zinc and was traditionally available in black, white and light petroleum. In connection with the 60th anniversary of the AJ Lamp, Louis Poulsen has launched 7 new colors, so the AJ table lamp is now also available in dark green, ochre, rust red, midnight blue, aubergine and two grey mid-tones. With the new colors, the AJ Table Lamp now looks even more modern and adds a breath of fresh air to your interior design. If you want consistency, the lamp also comes as a wall and floor lamp, so you can add a little AJ magic beyond the table.

The AJ Table Lamp does what it was created for - to complement the most beautifully designed furniture and create a whole interior design that exudes luxury. But the AJ Table Lamp can also provide a great contrast to old retro teak furniture, a cheap sideboard from Ikea or maybe a piece of furniture you built yourself? So whether you're watching TV in the Egg or an old worn armchair, the AJ Table Lamp will be a lamp investment for life!
