Anglepoise is a national treasure in the history of British design. Since suspension expert George Carwardine created the original Original 1227 in the 1930s, Anglepoise lamps have graced everything from pearl gravel workshops to ultra-modern loft apartments, from navigation tables aboard British bombers during World War II to its very own podium space at the renowned MoMA in New York.
The Original 1227 lamp is for many the archetypal architectural lamp - but Anglepoise also makes many other lamps such as Type 75, Type 80, 1227 Mini and 90 Mini. The lamps are world-renowned for their exquisite design, as well as their build quality - a build quality so high that when a crashed British bomber was fished out of Loch Ness in Scotland in 1985, the lamp on board worked. That's also why Anglepoise offers a lifetime warranty on your lamp.
Today, Anglepoise is run by Sir Kenneth Grange, who, like the Anglepoise brand, is world famous for his impact on British design.
Since 2003, design legend Sir Kenneth Grange has been at the helm of design on the Anglepoise ship. Grange began his career as a technical illustrator and has been blessing us with world-class designs for over half a century. He is known for his work with everyday objects such as Kenwood machines, Kodak cameras, London Taxis and the British Inter-City 125 - as well as everything else; cigarette lighters and pens.
Sir Kenneth George has said that Anglepoise lamps are his personal favorite lamps - and he has previously stated that the spring design of the Original-1227 is a small miracle. He couldn't resist adding to the Anglepoise portfolio himself - he is one of the creators of the Type 75, Type 1228, Type 75 Mini, Maxi, Giant and Type 80.
In a world where more and more things are thrown away, Anglepoise has rethought its business model and introduced their brand slogan Abandon Darkness and their amazing lifetime warranty.
As many know, Anglepoise has always been a lamp you buy for life. The British bomber that was pulled out of Loch Ness in the mid-1980's after crashing during World War II was equipped with an Anglepoise lamp, which the navigator used to illuminate maps. When the plane was rescued from the lake known for its monster, the lamp only needed a new battery - and it worked again.
So it made sense for Sir Kenneth Grange and the rest of Anglepoise to really incorporate the eternity lamp into their brand - and that's why Anglepoise promises that your lamp will last a lifetime: if it doesn't, you can send it to them and they will repair it, and if that's not possible, they will send a new one.
