Mantis Lamps

Bernard Schottlander was not only a great designer, he was also a great engineer and an exceptional craftsman. In addition to creating a lamp that can turn its head like a praying mantis, he has created a lamp that elegantly leans forward like the insect and keeps its balance using a series of counterweights.

Since the original Mantis lamp was designed in 1951, DCW-Editions has added a wide range of products to the Mantis series, and the original Mantis look is now available in many different shapes and sizes.

Kneeler lamps inspired by nature

The praying mantis may be used as a symbol of silence, meditation and prayer, but this particular insect is a finely tuned hunter that can turn its head 180 degrees to locate its prey and can take down both small birds and snakes - and it is the name inspiration for Schottlander's 1951 genius - the Mantis lamp.

In some African cultures, the praying mantis is said to bring good luck, the ancient Greeks believed that the praying mantis helped travelers find their way home, and in ancient South American cultures it was a symbol of female authority.

The devil horse, as the praying mantis is called in the Ozark Mountains, has left plenty of impressions over time with its unique expression - and the Mantis lamp from DCW-editions and Bernard Schottlander with its hunched expression and slim body is directly inspired by the beautiful insect.

Today, there are many different Mantis variants and the lamp is available as a floor lamp, wall lamp and table lamp today. One of the newest lamps in the series is the new BS8L, which builds on the original look of the Mantis model but has been improved and fine-tuned. The lamp has a wonderful silhouette with its slim body and the round wheel that replaces the classic counterweight.

All Mantis lights are adjustable and the large organic shade makes it easy to point the light exactly where you need it.
