The story of Fritz Hansen

During the first two years, the workshop in Christianshavn developed into a thriving business and laid the foundation for the high level of quality.

Since then, it has become a trademark for the company to deliver this high quality for the easily recognizable products, where the design also has a phenomenal longevity.

Over the years, Fritz Hansen has delivered top furniture and lighting craftsmanship to famous buildings such as Christiansborg, the University Library, Copenhagen City Hall, the Supreme Court, the Royal Hotel and many more, and these are just some of the Danish projects mentioned here.

One of the best-known icons from Fritz Hansen's portfolio, besides the famous 7' chair, is probably the Egg that effortlessly crosses decades, generations, continents and many other indefinable borders.

This beautiful armchair quickly establishes that extreme high quality paired with recognizable and thoughtful design with phenomenal longevity is the way to people's hearts.

Kaiser Idell - from Christian Dell

In the 1930s, German designer Christian Dell created the iconic KAISER idell lamp series, which marked the beginning of the pioneering Bauhaus design style.

Dell's career began as a silversmith apprentice, but he quickly developed a passion for industrial design and metalwork. His early years were characterized by work as a blacksmith and sculptor, which gave him a deep understanding of the properties and usability of materials.

Dell lamps distinguished themselves from previous designs by their focus on functionality and aesthetics without decorative superfluities. They were part of the modernist movement that strived to unite beauty and utility in everyday objects. Dell designs became popular not only for their visual appeal, but also for their ability to deliver efficient lighting in different environments, making them preferred choices in both private homes and professional workspaces.

Throughout his career, Dell continued to shape the German design world through his work as a designer and educator. His lamps remained a symbol of functionality and elegance and have inspired countless subsequent generations of designers. Christian Dell's legacy lives on through his timeless works that are still considered iconic in modern lighting design.

For over 150 years, Fritz Hansen designs have enriched various national and international interiors, with the collaboration between talented designers and architects being among the reasons for this. These chairs perfectly represent Jacobsen's ability to create timeless modern designs that are still popular and sought after today.

Jacobsen's collaboration with Fritz Hansen also led to the creation of the iconic "Seven" or "Series 7" chair in 1955. Known for its simple, curvy design, this chair has become a symbol of Danish modernism and functionality.

OneLine - From Poul Kjærholm to Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard

When you see the OneLine lamps, you're likely to think back to the legendary old Danish designer Poul Kjærholm - and that's no coincidence.

Poul Kjærholm originally trained as a carpenter and had a great interest in materials. He respected the materials he worked with and was unique in his time as he was one of the designers who treated steel with the same respect that was typically given to wood. He chased the perfect, purest form and went to great lengths to maintain the simplicity and minimalism of his designs, which he created between 1951 and 1967 - and which are also sold by Fritz Hansen.

Fast forward almost 50 years and you can find Kasper Kjeldgaard studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Denmark. In the aspiring designer's studio home was a PK54 table designed by Poul Kjærholm - and Kjeldgaard says he often ended up under it. Not because of student parties, but because he was captivated by the table's metal legs. It was the steel that Kjærholm was so famous for using that inspired Kasper Kjeldgaard.

The young designer also tried to refine the metal in his designs. With metal you can express yourself and you don't have to consider its properties in the same way as you do with wood, for example. Metal is functional, and that appeals to Kjeldgaard.

OneLine combines the two disciplines. The elegant lamp uses a simple, clean and easy-to-understand design that is also functional and lets the function of the materials speak for themselves.

Cecilie Manz for Rebublic of Fritz Hansen

The collaboration between Fritz Hansen and Danish designer Cecilie Manz started in 2005 with one of her most iconic and successful works - the The Caravaggio lamps that have since made a name for themselves in modern lighting design.

The Caravaggio lighting collection is a tribute to the Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio and is characterized by its simple, timeless design and powerful lighting. The range includes pendant lights, table lamps, wall lights and floor lamps, all sharing the same distinctive shade shape and subtle details.

The vision for the Caravaggio lamp was to create a lighting solution that combined aesthetics and functionality in a harmonious way. The result is a range of lamps that not only provide efficient lighting but also add an elegant and sophisticated touch to any room.

The characteristic feature of Caravaggio lamps is the slim, conical shade made of high-gloss lacquered metal. The simple and clean shape gives a stylish look, while the white painted inner shade ensures soft and even lighting without annoying glare.

The Caravaggio lamp series has gained international recognition and has become a favorite among designers and design enthusiasts around the world. Their timeless aesthetics and versatility make them suitable for a wide range of interior styles and spaces, from private homes to offices and public spaces.

Caravaggio lamps for Fritz Hansen demonstrate Manz's ability to create high-quality lighting design that is both beautiful and functional. Her work in lighting design has set the standard for modern lamps and continues to inspire and delight design enthusiasts around the world.

Jørn Utzon for Fritz Hansen

Jørn Utzon, the famous Danish architect known for designing the iconic Sydney Opera House, also collaborated with Fritz Hansen to create a number of notable designs. One of the most famous pieces to come out of this collaboration is the legendary Concert pendant.

Originally designed by Utzon back in 1947, the Concert pendant was part of his vision to create lighting that could create an atmosphere of light and warmth. The pendant was first presented publicly in 1947 under the name "Utzon Light", but it was not put into production by Fritz Hansen until many years later.

The uniqueness of the Concert pendant lies not only in its aesthetic qualities, but also in its history. It was originally created for a church in Utzon's hometown of Aalborg, where he wanted to create a lighting solution that would create an atmosphere of calm and solemnity. However, the pendant was not put into production until later, giving it a mysterious and legendary aura.

When the Concert pendant was finally put into production by Fritz Hansen, it was an instant success and found its way into homes, offices and public spaces all over the world. The pendant is characterized by its simple, elegant shape and use of materials such as aluminium and brass, giving it a timeless and sophisticated look.

Today, the Concert pendant continues to be a coveted design icon, admired for its unique history as well as its beautiful aesthetics. It represents not only Jørn Utzon's genius as an architect and designer, but also Fritz Hansen's commitment to promoting and preserving Danish design heritage worldwide.
