American brand Hermann Miller has more than 100 years of experience in interior design and manufacturing. In the early 1950s, the company's success really took off and around the same time, the brand's head of design created his first lighting design. The result was the Bubble\ series by George Nelson.
Since the beginning, the company has focused on furniture. Their office furniture in particular is world-renowned and synonymous with ergonomic yet innovative design. During its many years of manufacturing quality furniture, the company has collaborated with American designer couple Charles and Ray Eames, among others. The couple's design furniture is distributed under the name Vitra - which is Herman Miller's European partner. But while the company is perhaps best known today for this collaboration, the Bubble\ lamps should get the same amount of attention - they are absolutely stunning and an unrivaled representative of American modernism.
In line with the demand for mass-oriented production, George Nelson designed the Bubble lamps. The goal was clear - the series had to be a commercial success. It was therefore necessary to translate the design into efficient production to keep costs down and reach a wider audience. Not only did they succeed in creating a lighting range that industry could produce quickly and efficiently, but the design was also something special. The aesthetics of the lamps should also appeal to a wide audience.\ As a consequence of the ambitious goal, the lamps were made from an inner steel structure with a thin layer of plastic on the outside. A manufacturing process that still characterizes the production of the lamps. The design is beautiful and practical. In perfect alignment with the goals of modernism.
The designer behind the series was highly recognized in his time and still is. His designs - including his lighting - are exhibited in several prominent locations around the world. He is probably best known for the experimental sofa Marshmellow.\ The sofa, lamps and many of his other interior objects were created in collaboration with both the American company and their European partner Vitra.
