Patera

The Patera lamp has quickly become a new classic. The modern interpretation of a chandelier was designed by German designer Øivind Slaatto, in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 2015. Despite its ordinary design language; round like the sun, this pendant has a fantastic eye-catching design. At the same time, the lamp is discreet, honest and timeless. According to Slaatto, a perfect lamp requires no explanation - it tells its own story.

The lamp is available in several different sizes. With a diameter of 45 centimeters, the Patera 450 pendant is ideal above the dining table where it doesn't dazzle. With a diameter of 90 centimeters, the Patera 900 Pendant really comes into its own in rooms with high ceilings. The beautiful geometric pattern is illuminated by the light source in the center, creating a magical look and providing even 360-degree lighting.

Patera Pendant design by Øivind Slaatto

Due to the dark cold winters in Scandinavia, a warm and cozy light is preferred. Designing a lamp is therefore not just about creating light in the room, but about creating atmosphere and mood. For Patera designer Øivind Slaatto, the perfect lamp is natural in its expression and creates beautiful surroundings - both with its design, but also because of the light it creates.

"My ultimate goal was to create a form of three-dimensional sudoku. It was an extremely complicated mathematical challenge. And actually, Patera is the most complicated lamp I've ever made. With Patera, I have succeeded in creating a modern chandelier with an almost poetic expression, I think. I hope people are inspired to move around it. I hope it generates life." - Øivind Slaatto.

He has a great love for Danish design and, together with Louis Poulsen, has been inspired by Poul Henningsen principles - comfortable and glare-free lighting. The lamp is built so that every millimeter is illuminated by the light source, but you can only see the light source if you look directly into the lamp. The beautiful geometric shapes of the Patera pendant are inspired by the spiral pattern often found in nature, the Fibonacci Pattern. Especially in connection with seed formations such as the sunflower, pine cone and dandelion. The pattern forms the basis of the 'golden ratio' which has become significant in relation to famous artistic works, such as paintings by Leonardo da Vinci.
