PH Artichoke is one of the most famous lamps in Danish design history. The world-famous pine cone lamp is today seen as an international design icon and stands as a symbol of the Danish golden age of design. It was designed by Poul Henningsen, who was commissioned to create a chandelier for the modernist Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen that did not dazzle its surroundings. The result was the sculptural PH Artichoke lamp that still enchants in the Pavilion in Copenhagen.
In addition to the original copper color, the lamp has since been produced in both polished and brushed steel, as well as brass, white and black. Choose from four different sizes with a diameter between 48 and 84 centimeters.
Poul Henningsen was commissioned in 1958 to design a large chandelier for the modernist restaurant; Langelinie Pavillonen in Copenhagen. One of the requirements was very specific; it must not dazzle no matter what angle you viewed it from. Poul Henningsen solved the task by creating a PH lamp with 72 copper "leaves" distributed in 12 straight rows.
The elegant design, combined with copper, reflected a warm and pleasant light that fit perfectly into the exclusive restaurant. The beautiful Kogle lamp continues to enchant in the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen, where its distinctive shape and design create a welcoming appearance and superb light for the surroundings.
The original design in Copper, gave the lamp a natural look and a warm and comfortable light. The lamp was named after its similarity in shape to an artichoke, but due to its brownish hue, the lamp is reminiscent of a pine cone and is therefore often referred to as the Cone lamp.
Based on Poul Henningsen's lighting philosophy, Louis Poulsen today produces the Artichoke lamp, as well as a wide range of PH lamps from the renowned designer. To ensure the high level of quality, much of the production is still done by hand. Even though the PH Ball is more than 60 years old, it is still one of the most popular lamps. The world-famous design is today seen as an international design icon.
Over time, the PH Artichoke series has expanded with variations in brushed and polished steel, brass and white metal, as well as the latest PH Artichoke in black that was launched in early 2020. The matte black surface has a modern look that fits in perfectly with today's trends. An absolute showstopper that works as an impressive eye-catcher whether it's placed in the office, in a showroom or in the home.
