Louis Poulsen Lamps

Louis Poulsen has a long and proud history of designing lighting for both private and commercial use.

Louis Poulsen lamps have been recognized worldwide ever since Poul Henningsen was awarded the first gold medal at an international exhibition of decorative arts in Paris for his groundbreaking design way back in 1925.

Louis Poulsen produces a wide range of floor/stand lamps, table lamps, wall lights, pendants and outdoor lamps for both private and commercial use.

More about Louis Poulsen Lamps

Poul Henningsen laid the foundation for Louis Poulsen's great success with lamps. From the mid-20s until the 60s, Louis Poulsen's lamps were primarily designed by him. However, other notable designers have also worked for Louis Poulsen, such as Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Louise Campbell, Ross Lovegrove, Shoichi Uchiyama and Christian Flindt.

Timeless and unique lamp design & quality

The overall goal is to develop a lamp with a long technical and design life, which is why the timelessness of the products is a consistent quality that ensures the lamps a unique adaptability to both new and old architecture. In recent years, Louis Poulsen has had great success in maintaining its existing position while expanding with new and groundbreaking lamp designs.

Most recently, the collaboration with the young visionary designer Louise Campbell has resulted in great success with the organic and colorful Collage lamp, and before that success, the equally innovative Enigma pendant lamp designed by Japanese designer Shoichi Uchiyama.

The iconic PH lamp by Poul Henningsen

Among Louis Poulsen's range of classic and iconic lamps, we can't ignore the unique PH lamps. The lamp was originally designed in 1925, when it was first presented as a pendant with three shades - also known as the three-shade system. The uniqueness of the screen system was that the screens both hid the light source and reflected the light without glare. What designer Poul Henningsen didn't know at the time was that his designs would have a major impact on the history of lighting design and would go on to become a Danish design icon.

Alfred Homann

Born: 1948-2022 Famous works: Nyhavn lamp, Homann lamp, Ensemble chair.\ Education: Architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen

**History Alfred Homann graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 1976. During his studies, he worked for the famous Vilhelm Wohlert, where he also spent his first years after graduation.\ Homann has been the director of his own design and architecture office in Denmark, and practiced as a designer in the US from 1987 to 1995.\ He always uses the best materials in a very deliberate and tough design. Throughout his professional career he has been honored with the following awards: "Die Gute Industrie Form" in 1978, "ID Award" in 1987, "ION Award" in 1988, "Design Innovation Award" in 1992.\ Homann's works are the result of careful and thorough thinking and development processes, characterized by great gentleness, treatment and care for the people who use the products and live in his buildings.

"In general, I don't rely on any particular form of inspiration in terms of things or objects I've seen. I look for the connection between the thing to be designed and its purpose - in other words, a holistic view. Sketching is a form of clarification process. Once the best idea has been chosen, the next step is to create a model. This is especially important for the quality of light, as drawings cannot depict the fourth dimension of light - the perception of the finer details often involves a long process of interaction with a chosen production method." Quote: Alfred Homann.

Louise Campbell

Born: 1970 Famous works: Campbell pendant, Collage pendant, Snow floor lamp, LC Shutters, All for Louis Poulsen Education: Designer at the Danish School of Design.

**History Louise Campbell was born in 1970 in Copenhagen. Being the daughter of a Danish father and an English mother, she grew up and trained in both countries. After graduating from the London College of Furniture in 1992, she returned to Denmark and continued her studies on industrial design at the Danish Design School, graduating in 1995. In 1996 she created her own studio, where she has been working ever since. Her main focus is furniture and lighting fixtures, but the studio is also involved in other interior design projects.

Louise Campbell's work is playful and experimental, and she has gained a reputation for gently distorting everyday products and situations, as well as going in new directions with materials and production processes. The combination of Scandinavian rationalism and feminism, and perhaps also her dual nationality, gives her an unusual advantage. Illustrative contrasts seem to be a recurring factor in her work.

The design studio is also known for its small-profit creative activities. In addition to curating and designing exhibitions, Louise Campbell has participated in numerous activities aimed at improving the design environment in Denmark. Among these activities is "Walk the Plank", which is a collaboration between 30 furniture designers and 60 cabinetmakers who have all donated their time and original designs to this great cause.

There are a few basic rules that the studio lives by: Always start from scratch. Everything is possible until proven otherwise. There must be a good reason for every decision you make.

Louise Campbell designed the Campbell pendant, Collage pendant, LC SHutters pendant and Snow floor lamp for Louis Poulsen.

Among the various awards Louise Campbell has won is the IF Product Design Award in gold, which she received for the Campbell Pendant in 2005, which she designed especially for Louis Poulsen Lighting.

Vilhelm Wohlert

Born: 1920 - Death: 2007 Famous works: Dehns Palæ, Frederik IX's Chapel at Roskilde Cathedral, the satellite commuters from Louis Poulsen.\ Education: Architect

**History Vilhelm Wohlert graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in 1944 and was a professor there from '68 to '86. The satellite pendants from Louis Poulsen.

From 1946 to '47 he worked with Sven Ivar Lind, Sven Markelius and Hakon Ahlberg in Stockholm and ran his own studio from 1949.

After graduating, he established the design studio Bo og Wohlert together with Jørgen Bo, which became known for the Louisiana Art Museum in Humlebæk, built from 1957.

Vilhelm Wohler was especially known as a restoration architect and for creating the building for the Louisiana Museum. In 1956, Wohlert was given this task by the museum's founder, Knud W. Jensen, and it became a life task for Vilhelm Wohlert to design Louisianna.\ Wohlert, together with his colleague Jørgen Bo, spent 33 years on the project before the final extension was completed.

Other well-known projects by Wohlert: the Kirstineparken housing estate in Hørsholm in 1965 to 1968, Stengård Church in 1962, the Technological Institute in Høje Taastrup in 1970 to 1978, Frederik IX's Chapel at Roskilde Cathedral in 1985 to 1986, with Inger and Johannes Exner and restorations of Dehns Palæ in 1984 to 1986 and Hørsholm Church in 1987 to 1988 and Sankt Ansgar Church in 1989 to 1992.

Alongside Louisiana, Wohlert also designed single-family homes as well as other museum buildings and churches. He also worked on the restoration of the Church of Our Lady (Copenhagen) and several royal palaces. He also designed furniture to a lesser extent.

Wohlert was also rewarded for his work with several awards, the Wood Prize in 1958 (together with Jørgen Bo), the "Bundespreis Gute Form" in Berlin in 1972, a diploma from the Copenhagen Cultural Foundation in 1974, 1976, 1979 and 1987, the C.F. Hansen Medal in 1979, the Society for Building and Landscape Culture Prize in 1981, the Dreyer Foundation Architecture Prize in 1982, the DAL Architecture Prize in 1985 and the Brolægger Prize in 1987. Wohlert was also a Knight of the Dannebrog.
