One of Martinelli Luce's most iconic designs is the Cobra table lamp, created by Elio Martinelli himself in 1968. The lamp has a slim and elegant shape reminiscent of a snake and has won several awards for its unique design.

In 1950, Italian designer Elio Martinelli founded the company that would later become one of Italy's most innovative and experimental lighting manufacturers. After graduating as a stage designer from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, the young designer set up his own studio in the medieval Tuscan town of Lucca, creating lighting systems and lamps for commercial interiors.
In the following years, he also collaborated with several talented and renowned designers from different parts of Italy. It quickly secured the company its well-deserved status as an innovative lighting manufacturer that stood for minimalist design. The design was influenced by the founder's fascination with nature and simple geometric shapes. At the same time, the company developed and used a number of new materials in the 1960s and 1970s, which resulted in more exciting and sculptural lamps.
The company has remained a family business and is now in its third generation. A generation whose mission is to continue the sharp eye for Italian design at its best.
Today, Martinelli Luce continues to be known and loved for its innovative technology as well as its sculptural and experimental approach to shaping and design.
The most famous of the company's many lamps is probably the beautiful Pipistrello table lamp. It was designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965. Inspired by nature's organic forms, she created a functional and versatile table lamp. Her focus on functionality can be seen, for example, in the user's ability to adjust the light in height. The centerpiece consists of an adjustable telescopic pole that can be easily and conveniently adjusted according to the height at which the user needs light. At the same time, the classic design is made from innovative plastics such as opal methacrylate. It is represented in design museums around the world and today enjoys a special status as a coveted design object worldwide.
The shape of the screen is inspired by the wings of a bat, hence the name. Pipstrello means "bat" in Italian.
