Maters lamps are designed for both commercial and residential use and we strive to avoid and minimize any negative impact on society by following ethical and environmental production criteria and creating products that are both timeless and inspire the consumer to cherish and enjoy them. Our core business philosophy is based on three key principles: design, craftsmanship and ethics.
"Mater" means "Mother" in Latin and the name is the daily reminder of our small contribution to prevent the challenges facing mother earth. Design influences how we as humans live our lives; it shapes values, cultures and societies. Unfortunately, we are increasingly aware that the choices made during design processes often have costly environmental consequences. But as a manufacturer, we have the opportunity to rethink questionable practices and create ethical design that minimizes negative social and environmental impacts. "

Todd Bracher
Mater collaborates with a number of renowned designers and emerging talents, all of whom beautifully convey their design philosophy by adding a range of timeless, quality products in sustainable materials and craftsmanship to their unique lighting range. Famous American designer Todd Bracher is among these designers, who together with Mater have created the elegant and award-winning Dome table lamps. In relation to working with Mater, he describes himself: "Working with Mater is a chance for a designer to connect with local artisans to exchange ideas. With globalization, the world is losing indigenous crafts, which is why an awareness of preserving such crafts, is increasingly important. They're not only expressions of our cultural diversity, they also represent a wealth of experiences and know-how that are essential resources in developing novel concepts and designs."
Todd Bracher is a designer, entrepreneur, and researcher who pulls on all of these roles in his work as CEO of Studio Bracher, an award-winning design and strategy firm with over two decades of experience producing innovative products. In addition to Todd Bracher Studio, he also founded Betterlab, based on the premise that it's best to create things that don't already exist, but should exist to improve our world wherever possible. So with over a dozen patents and over 200 products on the market, you can be sure that Todd Bracher lighting is something out of the ordinary!
Todd Bracher has been based in New York for many years, but has previously worked in Copenhagen, Milan, Paris and London, where he has collaborated with some of the most prestigious design brands in the world. Once he graduated from Pratt Institute's Industrial Design Program in 1999, he worked full-time in New York, only to find out that he had been accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design in Copenhagen on a scholarship he never expected to receive. This led to an extended stay in Denmark, which also resulted in him becoming the creative director of Scandinavian luxury brand Georg Jensen in 2004.
Maija Pouskari
Maija Pouskari is a Finnish designer who graduated from Aalto University. She is responsible for a wide range of design products and has helped design products for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Finland. Many of her designs are now on display at the Helsinki Design Museum - truly embracing the modern Finnish design style of organic materials, minimalist lines and purity that make her products versatile and beautiful in a huge variety of contexts.
At Lampemesteren, we know her best for one collaboration in particular - the collaboration with Danish Mater. Mater is known for their Nordic style, their work with designers from all over the Nordic region and their huge focus on sustainability - and therefore Maija Pouskari's elegant design lines fit perfectly into the Danish company's universe. She is behind two lamp series:
The Liuku lamps
Liuku comes in a variety of different variants and sizes - but what they all have in common is their beautiful aesthetics. Liuku can be purchased and used with or without a glass screen - and the wooden body is of course fully FSC-certified.
Use them above the kitchen island where the natural look will play elegantly with the Nordic cuisine and raw ingredients in particular.
Terho lamps
Continuing the concept of Liuku, Terho also uses FSC-certified wood and glass combined with inspiration from Finnish nature. Terho lamps come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors - both with opalized and clear smoked glass.
Use Terho above the dining table - or hang them in a cluster in different combinations for an artistic look in your home!
