The Pilke story begins at the intersection of ancient Finnish craft traditions and production methods from the cutting edge of innovation. With a deep respect for the same nature that provides the materials for the lamps the company makes, Pilke creates products that both reference and redefine Nordic design style and production.
The Finnish company only produces a small handful of lamp series - but the series are well thought out down to the smallest detail. Without the use of screws or glue, the elegant wooden lamps are assembled and using natural materials, Pilke creates eco-friendly lighting products you'll never get tired of.
Finnish design with nature in focus
From the first design stroke to the production and shipping of the iconic Pilke lamps, environmental sustainability is in focus. The company takes great pride in its Finnish background and has nature at the center of its production from start to finish. That's why the entire production chain is designed with both environmental and social sustainability in mind.
Design: The Finnish lamps are designed to be easily repaired and reused as they are designed to be assembled without screws and glue. This way, wood is allowed to be wood, and if your lamp gets damaged - or needs to be passed on to someone else who can benefit from it - it can be easily disassembled or repaired.
Wood production: The lamps are produced in Hirvensalmi in southeastern Finland by a company called Koskinen, which is over 100 years old. The wood used comes from Finnish forests that are carefully looked after - and when the planks are cut, Koskinen is proud that there is almost no waste material.
Cutting: The wooden boards are sent to the Muototerä wood cutting company in Tampere. The pieces to be used for the lamps are cut out of the wooden boards using water cutting, which means no chemicals, steam or smoke are emitted. The wood cut this way also doesn't have the marks that it would have if it was cut with a laser.
Collection: The lamps are collected at Kolmituote in Salo, a non-profit social organization that helps disabled people find work and rehabilitation. Three people at Kolmituote are trained in the collection of Pilke lamps and assemble all Pilke lamps by hand.
The company's extremely aesthetic and beautiful lights never compromise on production methods, which is why you are always guaranteed good and responsible design with Pilke lights. Tuukka Halonen, who is behind both Pilke Signature and Havas, says that quality in materials, production and usability are crucial for the long-term use of a product - for him, a chair bought at a flea market after twenty years in a living room only to be used for another twenty years is the ultimate in recycling - and for him, the dream is to create lamps that can similarly last for generations.
