Tom Rossau Lamps

Tom Rossau is a self-taught designer who started his career in the basement of his parents' house in Fårevejle, Denmark. Initially, LEGO and all kinds of available materials were used, but soon a direction took shape and the production of leather clothing began. Tom designed and sewed it himself, which led to the opening of a store in 1997 in Copenhagen.

Since 2004, Tom Rossau has worked primarily with natural wood veneers. Initially, these lamps were only available from the old store on Istedgade in Copenhagen, but in 2006 TR4, TR5, TR6 and TR7 were introduced to a wider audience at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair, where TR7 received the audience's "Favorite Award".

Here you'll find all the beautiful lights from Tom Rossau!

Growing pains in the brand

In 2004, there was a shift in material selection as wood veneer arrived. Initially, the lamps were only available through the store in Istedgade, but from 2006 when TR4 to TR7 were introduced to the general public at Copenhagen Furniture Fair, something suddenly happened - TR7 received the "Audience Favorite Award".

Although there have been growing pains at the heavy end for Tom Rossau, the core and soul of the company is still maintained, and this can be boiled down to one word: Design.

With annual exhibitions at IMM in Cologne and Northern Light Fair in Stockholm, the number of retailers sharing Tom Rossau's story is growing rapidly. The portfolio continues to grow and now includes bookcases, a transformative coffee and dining table and a host of new lamps.

A growing company with original values

This is expressed here in Tom Rossau's own words:

"The design process is actually quite selfish for me. It may be that the final consumer gets his or her needs met by the product, but to be honest, I do it for the rush it gives me. It's quite exciting to have an idea out of the blue, then to work with it, to get caught up in the whole process and be completely absorbed in the details from the early drawings and prototypes and to get it all through to production.\ Then there's the magical experience when a material intended for a prototype suddenly behaves erratically and reveals unintended properties. The only thing to do is dive into the new possibilities and explore the potential to the fullest. The inspiration for the different designs comes from everywhere, but the process of defining the limitations and potential is a great experience in itself. Often it would be more appropriate to refer to the material itself when asking about the designer, as I am then just the helper picking up screws and fitting the loose ends …

With functionality, sustainability and energy consumption as obvious cornerstones of good design, meeting the demands of the end consumer becomes an even more exciting task. But overall, I'm a big believer in randomness and strengthening the element of play in all (good) design."
