Benjamin Hubert is a talented British designer who, despite his young age, has already been credited with a number of impressive awards for his work. Hubert graduated in 2006 and founded a London-based design studio, LAYER, specializing in industrial furniture and lighting design, which led to various collaborations with international manufacturers across Europe and Asia. In this company, Hubert has designed a range of large, small and limited edition projects for both private and public use, which has also earned him international recognition and prestigious awards.
LAYER also collaborates with big, forward-thinking companies including Nike, Google, Bang & Olufsen, Samsung and Braun to create products that will help define the way we all live, work and communicate in the future. In their company, they work to analyze human behavior to create products that engage with users and their environment in a meaningful way. He describes it this way: "To justify introducing a new product to the world, there must be a tangible benefit at its core, something that sets it apart from its predecessors". He doesn't just create a design for design's sake, but with a focus on functionality, usability and necessity.
In addition to his own company, Benjamin Hubert has also had several lucrative collaborations with international, well-known brands, including &Tradition, for whom he designed the Spinning series; Italian KDLN, for whom he created the Frame wall lamp; Finnish Muuto, with whom he designed the unique and timeless Strand collection; and Italian Fabbian, for whom he created the unique Roofer design. He has also had a short collaboration with Danish Fritz Hansen, with whom he co-designed a simple and stylish magazine holder.
In his work, Hubert is very much inspired by the simplicity of various crafts, which he applies to his designs through unconventional materials such as cork, concrete and paper with a solid attention to functionality. He is also known for his lively approach to design and his attention to detail in every aspect of the design process, which is why a unique, aesthetic and highly functional design is always created when Benjamin Hubert is involved.
