David Trubridge

David Trubridge was born in England, but as well as moving house, his heart is firmly rooted in New Zealand. This nature-loving tree hugger of a designer embraces design, sustainability and thoughtful solutions at a level where he's all his own.
Whether it was the training as a ship designer that did it is unknown, but in 1980 David sold all his worldly possessions to sail around the world with his wife and their two children on a yacht called The Hornpipe. For the next five years, they sailed the Caribbean and Pacific, interrupted only by stops in the Virgin Islands and Tahiti, where Trubridge designed furniture and interiors for clients on the islands.

Bay of Islands and sustainable design
In 1985, the family arrived in New Zealand, where they fell in love with the Bay of Islands, where they subsequently chose to stay. However, they kept the good ship The Hornpipe. Now the next exciting chapter in David Trubridge's life began as he started designing ecological, sustainable furniture and lighting. The whole process is heavily influenced by Trubridge's background as a ship designer, his travels and the sense of infinite openness he experienced first-hand during their maritime adventure. The Canoe Kano Chair series was born out of this reflection. It's made as an outrigger canoe, basically lightweight, flexible structures attached with lashings of rope, integrating the graceful canoe shape with the practical piece of furniture that is a chair.
David Trubridge stands out from the crowd not only through his minimalist style, but also his conscious use of sustainable raw materials that are in total harmony with nature. Respect for the environment and our beautiful planet serves as the foundation of his creative process. The entire process is well thought out, from raw material selection and logistics to product design and realization. This total attention to detail throughout the entire process from raw start-up to finished product on site is one of the many reasons David Trubridge has become the leading eco designer in New Zealand… and the rest of the world.
Today, Trubridge is featured in many exhibitions around the world and continues to take on exciting commissions for prestigious global organizations (such as the Nobel Peace Center) and companies (such as Bombay Sapphire), as well as art projects in New Zealand and Australia.
