As one of the most significant figures in American modernism, George Nelson has made a major contribution to the modern understanding of interiors and design. After studying at the American Academy in Rome, he returned to North America in 1934 with inspiration and ideas from European modernism. The simultaneous emigration of former Bauhaus architects to America meant that the great country became a leader in modernism in the following years. George Nelson shared the contemporary enthusiasm for clean lines, new materials and constructions, and he greatly contributed to the spread of the style in the United States by introducing both articles on famous European modernists and spreading their furniture designs.
From 1945, the talented editor was offered a position as design director at the American furniture manufacturer Hermann Miller. Here he designed and drew his own furniture, clocks and lamps. At the same time, he ensured that the company became one of the most innovative furniture manufacturers by collaborating with many talented and renowned designers. For Hermann Miller, he designed the organic Bubble lamps, among other things.
