Born: 1912.\ Death: 1985.\ Known works: Model 2065 lamp, Model 2097 chandelier and Model 548 lamp.\ Education: Architect and designer.
Gino Sarfatti was born in Venice back in 1912, and as a young man he was studying engineering. He wanted to be an aeronautical engineer, but unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately - family circumstances forced him back to Milan and this was the start of one of the greatest Italian lighting design stories. Sarfatti played a significant role in Italy's industrial design history and has developed more than 700 luminaires.
Among his most popular lamps is the 2097 chandelier, also known as the 'Sarfatti Chandelier'. It's a chandelier that was designed in 1958 and is still one of the most popular chandeliers today. Model 548, currently available at Astep, was designed back in 1951, but in 2013 it was revived when the third generation of the Sarfatti family relaunched the retro-modern table lamp.
Below you can see more lamps designed by Gino Sarfatti and at the bottom you can read much more about the designer.
Back in Milan, Gino Sarfatti had his first lighting design meeting and the task was clear. He had to turn a glass vase into a lamp. This encounter created a fascination with light and lighting - and became his way of life. He founded the lighting company Arteluce at the age of 27. This is where his career really took off and he brought Italian lighting into the 20th century. Sarfatti combined innovative ideas with cutting-edge design.
Gino Sarfatti and Arteluce won numerous prizes and awards, including the Compasso d'Oro in both 1954 and 1955; the first and most recognized award in its field. The success continued and Arteluce and Sarfatti received the honorary diploma from Triennale di Milano, an architecture and industrial design fair founded in 1923 that takes place in Milan every three years. The Triennale di Milano became an important meeting place for many leading Italian architects in the 1950s and 1960s.
Founded in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce achieved great success through hard work and a solid strategy. The first Arteluce store was located in Milan and was designed together with Marco Zanuso, an Italian architect who later became known for larger buildings and iconic chairs.
10 years later, Sarfatti designed his flagship, which is located on Via della Spiga. It was a design created with his lifelong friend, Vittoriano Viganò, who also knew something about lighting; he is known for the VV lamp series, which can be found in the Astep range.
Throughout his career, Gino Sarfatti was inspired by new product types, innovative materials, lighting technology, and production techniques.\ His great talent as both a designer and engineer enabled him to create refined lamps, both in terms of aesthetics and function.
In 1973, Gino Sarfatti retired and sold his legacy to Flos, where you can find his popular 2097 chandelier today. The Sarfatti name is synonymous with world-class lighting, and a selection of the beautiful lamps designed by Gino Sarfatti can be found at Astep, where you will also meet the third generation of the Sarfatti family - who were truly born into light.
