Marcel Wanders was born in Boxtel in the Netherlands.\ In 1988 he graduated as a designer from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in 1988 after being expelled from the Design Academy Eindhoven.
In 1995 he opened his studio in Amsterdam, only to gain worldwide attention in 1996 with his iconic Knotted Chair. In 2001, Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers founded Moooi, where Wanders is still co-owner and art director today.
He is also hard at work in his Powerhouse Studio, where he works as a product and interior designer and art director. Powerhouse has around 50 international design specialists who have worked on over 1,700 projects for private clients and premium brands such as Kartell, Alessi, Bisazza, KLM, Flos, Swarovski, Boffi, Puma and many more.
Wanders has received various design awards over the years, including the Design Prize Rotterdam and the Kho Liang Ie Award. He has taught at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, LIMN, Design Academy, Nike, IDFA, and FutureDesignDays, as well as numerous prestigious design schools worldwide. In 2002, Business Week selected Marcel Wanders as one of Europe's 25 'Leaders of Change'.
