Øivind Slaatto was born in Germany, but grew up on Funen. Today he lives in Copenhagen, where he is the founder of the design studio SLAATTO DESIGN. Øivind Slaatto has won several awards for his designs, such as the popular A9 BeoPlay speaker for Bang & Olufsen, the Patera pendants for Louis Poulsen and the Swirl series for Le Klint.
Øivind Slaatto and design When Øivind started at the music conservatory, he had no doubt that he would become a musician - just like his mother and father. Along the way, however, he realized that he was spending more and more time drawing lines for design rather than sheet music. So he changed tack and graduated as an industrial designer from the Danish Design School in 2008.
He is particularly inspired by nature and is especially fascinated by the Fibonacci pattern, which we know from seed formations - seen in a sunflower, dandelions and pine cones. The pattern forms the basis of the 'golden ratio' which has become significant in relation to famous artistic works, such as paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. The pattern is evident in his design of the Patera Pendant for Louis Poulsen and the Swirl series for LE KLINT.
According to Øivind, light, form and function must work together to provide a beautiful lighting experience that can create a better life. A good example is the brilliant combination of high-tech solutions and exquisite design embodied in the Shade Pendant ØS1. His lamp design is simple and honest, yet with a beautiful and poetic expression. He manages to create lamps that not only create light, but also create mood and atmosphere in the surroundings.
