The story

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish writer Agnes Henningsen. He never completed his education as an architect, but studied at the Copenhagen Technical School in Frederiksberg from 1911-1914 and then spent three years at the Technical University in Copenhagen.

He started out practicing in traditional functionalist architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting and lamp design, which is also what made him most famous. Besides being a designer, he also started writing and became both a journalist and author. A short period at the beginning of WW2. During World War II, he was an architect at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, but like so many other creative people, he had to flee Denmark during the German occupation. He soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of architects in Sweden.

Poul Henningsen's lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and only ended with his death. Today, Louis Poulsen still benefits from his genius; all PH lamps are proof of this, as they are still sold around the world and have classic status among all lamp lovers.

Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of Louis Poulsen's magazine NYT. The then CEO of Louis Poulsen, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave Henningsen the magazine as a gift because he had been fired from the newspaper he worked for as his opinions were a bit too radical.

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work in lighting theory regarding structure, shadows, glare and color rendering in relation to the human need for light is still practiced today at Louis Poulsen. Many architects and designers have also found great inspiration in the concept behind PH lamps, which only emphasizes Poul Henningsen's genius.
