The PH 5 Mini Pendant Lamp Brass is a smaller version of the classic PH 5 Pendant Lamp. The lifelong collaboration between Louis Poulsen and Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) began as early as 1924. As an architect, writer and cultural critic, Poul Henningsen was one of the first to recognise the importance of shaping electric light. After his revolutionary development of the three-shade system in 1926, he further developed the system in 1958 and designed the PH 5 pendant lamp. After analysing the reflective qualities of light, the important Danish designer designed an innovative lamp characterised by its totally glare-free and symmetrical lighting properties. His constant work in lighting theory with structures, shadows, glare and colour rendering, and with the human experience of light as the centre of the whole, is still practiced today at Louis Poulsen.
Poul Henningsen was and remains the most significant designer for Louis Poulsen. The ideas behind his iconic designs are widely recognised in the company's lighting profile. He was also a strong cultural personality of his time, who, in addition to his passion for "good light", extended to revue, social criticism and satire. The collaboration between Louis Poulsen as a manufacturer and Poul Henningsen as a designer lasted throughout his life.
Six decades after Poul Henningsen's famous PH 5 pendant lamp first saw the light of day, it remains Louis Poulsen's best-selling lamp and a special representative of the revolutionary way Henningsen worked to shape light. The original 50 cm diameter version was immensely popular and sought after. So much so that in 2017, Louis Poulsen decided to launch a scaled-down version of just 30 cm - the PH 5 mini. To mark the 125th anniversary of PH's birth, both versions will be launched in 2019 with a brass lampshade.
The PH 5 is the result of Henningsen's hard work to create a completely glare-free pendant light and is a further development of his three-shade system. The lamp has five lampshades, with the bottom one hidden under the top four. The design creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere where the human experience of light takes centre stage. With its mirrored brass finish, the lamp beautifully reflects its surroundings in the room in an elegant way - whether it is switched on or off.
Note: Brass is a natural material, and as such, it changes with the influence of its surroundings, and therefore over time the brass surface will appear darker and less shiny. This is a natural process and each lamp will acquire its own individual patina. However, if you want the surface to be shiny and bright, you can do this with a brass polish, but be sure to: use a special polish suitable for brass or copper; use a polish with as little abrasive as possible; use a soft cloth for both rubbing and polishing; use the gloves provided to keep the lamp free of fingerprints.
