PH 80 Floor Lamp Opal/Black is a member of the 3-shade family, which today includes an impressive collection of lamps, including a few for outdoor use. Poul Henningsen (PH) designed the 3-shade system as early as 1925-1926, when he collaborated with Louis Poulsen to design the first lamps for an exhibition in Paris. Throughout his life, Poul Henningsen sought to create glare-free light, directing light where it was needed and creating soft shadows. He designed not just one lamp, but an entire system, with around a thousand different models produced over the years.
The floor lamp emits a lovely diffused light. Most of the light is directed downwards by the acrylic shades, which also help to emit the light horizontally and upwards. The shade design is based on a logarithmic spiral, where the focal point of the light source is located in the center of the spiral.
PH lamp numbers usually refer to the shade size, however, this is not the case with the PH 80. The lamp was made after Poul Henningsen's death to mark his 80th birthday in 1974, hence the name PH 80.
