How does Philips Hue work?

Philips Hue is the newest and most cutting-edge development in the world of lighting. There are almost no limits to where these bulbs and lamps can be used and the sort of atmosphere they can create. Just like gaming, gardening or collecting, Philips Hue can become your new hobby. You can connect up to 50 Hue bulbs to a single starter kit, you can choose between 16 million different colours and you can synchronise Hue with you TV or music system so the lighting matches the sound. You can choose between color temperatures via white ambience or 16 million colors via color ambience and even connect up to 50 Hue bulbs or 12 Hue lamps to a starter kit. Hue products are incredibly quick and easy to install, use and expand. You can program your lamps to turn off when you leave and turn on again when you’re a certain distance from your home. You can dim them, mix Hue white and color bulbs, and have them project several different colours at the same time – all by controlling them with a single smart device. You can play with different color tones and create the perfect mood lighting, and best of all you can get Hue bulbs in many, different socket types.

Philips Hue starter kit - what is it?

With the purchase of a Philips Hue White Ambience starter kit you get two E27 bulbs, a dimmer that can be used inside the home and a bridge, which is the device that connects to your WiFi so you can communicate between your smart device and the bulbs/lights. The starter kit can also be purchased without the dimmer if you prefer to use your smartphone only. The bulbs contain all types of white colors, ranging from a nice warm white for cozy lighting to colder task lighting.

With the Philips Hue White/Color-starter kit, in addition to the bridge and dimmer, you get two bulbs that, in addition to ambience, can be adjusted in 16 million different colors that you can switch between and use interchangeably.

Philips Hue products can be placed anywhere in the home. For example, you can use a Philips Hue light strip at the staircase or under your furniture to create a unique lighting expression in your home. You can also use a smaller bulb with a GU10 socket, which fits perfectly in a Philips Hue spotlight that can also be dimmed wirelessly according to your needs and mood.

You can also take advantage of bulbs with Bluetooth technology so you can operate them instantly in a quick, easy and efficient way - see our full range of Philips Hue Bluetooth bulbs here. You can also use a Philips Hue outdoor lamp, which you can also connect to your Bridge, to bring the great lighting and atmosphere to your outdoor spaces.

You can also place a motion sensor in the garage or a hallway, so your intelligent lights automatically turn on when they register movement so you don't have to fumble around in the dark. The battery-powered Hue motion sensor can be installed using a magnetic bracket or a single screw, and you can install it anywhere you want without the mess of complicated cables. What’s more, you can use your Hue app to adjust your motion sensor and change your settings depending on the time of day.

What are Philips Hue light strips?

If you like to play with light, experimenting with possibilities and having fun, take a look at the Philips Hue LightStrip starter kit. These light strips are great for creating interesting effects on stairs, in cabinets or even behind the TV. You can change their length and color, and since they’re mounted with adhesive, they’re easy to move without leaving ugly screw holes in your walls. If you choose to move your light strips somewhere else, there is nothing to reveal where they were before.

Kelvin and lumens

The energy output of bulbs used to be measured in watts, but the brightness of LED bulbs is measured in lumen (lm). This loosely translates to the wattage of a halogen bulb. For example, 140 lumen is equivalent to 15 watts; a traditional 100 watt bulb puts out 1,520 lumen.

You can also measure kelvin on a light bulb. It's a measure of color temperature. A bulb with warm light is somewhere between 2700 and 3000 kelvin, neutral color temperature is between 3500 and 4000 kelvin, and a cold bulb ranges between 4000 and 6500 kelvin. The warmer the light you want, the lower the kelvin you should look for.

Philips Hue LED – make the right choice!

All Philips Hue products are LED. This means that they are very energy efficient, but they can also be dimmed. It's not a given that LED bulbs and lamps are dimmable, but it's always the case with Philips Hue products.
